When Padmini Kolhapure kissed Prince Charles and created a stir: 'British immigration officer asked me...I was left embarrassed..'

Padmini Kolhapure was considered one of the most popular actresses of the 80s. Known for her movies like ‘Prem Rog’, ‘Woh 7 Din’ among many others, Padmini made headlines once when she kissed Prince Charles on the cheek during his visit to India. It was just a peck on the cheek and yet it created a huge stir.

When Prince Charles visited a film set

For those not in the know, Prince Charles had visited India in 1981 and had gone to the set of a film called ‘Ahista Ahista‘, to wtiness Indian film-making. This movie starred Padmini. The actress ended up giving him a peck on the cheek as she met him but it became a huge deal in those times. The British media called her, ‘the woman who kissed Prince Charles’.
When asked about it, Padmini had said in an interview, “He was visiting Mumbai and I don’t know what he thought that he wanted to see a shoot. We were shooting for Ahista Ahista at Rajkamal Studios. Shashikalaji did his Indian aarti and I just greeted him with a peck on his cheek. But, in those days, it became a big thing. I remember I went to London for a holiday and this British immigration officer asked me, ‘Are you the same person who kissed Prince Charles?’ I was left embarrassed.”

Padmini eloped and got married

The actress fell in love with Pradeep Sharma who was the producer of her film ‘Aisa Pyaar Kahan’. She eloped and got married to him. Padmini’s sister Shivangi Kolhapure is married to Shakti Kapoor and they helped her get married to Pradeep. Padmini and Pradeep have a son, Priyank Sharma.
