Haryana established a strong position against defending champions Mumbai in their Ranji Trophy quarter-final match in Kolkata. They reached 263 for five at stumps on day two, with captain Ankit Kumar‘s outstanding century leading the charge.
Ankit Kumar scored 136 runs, marking his second consecutive century in this tournament. His performance helped Haryana move within 52 runs of Mumbai’s first-innings total.
Mumbai’s innings concluded at 315, recovering from their earlier struggle at 113 for seven. Tanush Kotian contributed significantly but fell short of his century at 97 runs when Sumit Kumar dismissed him.
The Mumbai innings received a late boost from Mohit Avasthi, who scored 21 runs alongside Royston Dias. Their partnership helped Mumbai cross the 300-run mark.
Haryana’s batting began after Mumbai’s 45-minute morning session. The conditions favored the batsmen as the pitch offered little assistance to the seamers.
Ankit Kumar and Lakshay Dalal opened strongly for Haryana, putting together 87 runs in 24 overs. Their partnership ended when Shardul Thakur dismissed Dalal for 34 runs in the post-lunch session.
Ankit Kumar continued his aggressive batting, particularly against the pace bowlers. He scored 21 boundaries, with 16 of them coming against the seamers. His innings featured well-timed drives on both sides of the wicket.
Yashvardhan Dalal supported his captain well, scoring 36 runs and sharing an 81-run partnership for the second wicket.
Left-arm spinner Shams Mulani proved most effective against Ankit Kumar, limiting him to just two boundaries. Mulani eventually claimed Kumar’s wicket, caught by Mumbai captain Ajinkya Rahane.
Mumbai’s spin duo of Mulani and Kotian showed promise, taking two wickets each. Mulani finished with figures of 2/59, while Kotian took 2/57 in 15 overs.
The pace bowlers struggled throughout the day but may find better conditions on the third morning with early moisture. Mumbai’s priority will be to restrict Haryana’s lead.
With this being a five-day game, Mumbai still has opportunities to make a comeback. The pitch is expected to favor spin bowling on days four and five, which could prove crucial in the final stages.
