SALEM: Sleuths of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) on Wednesday arrested a bill collector at the Narasingapuram municipal office in Salem district for accepting a bribe of Rs 25,000.
The bill collector, identified as V Gunasekaran, 49, of Attur, was involved in a case with R Ganapathy, 45, of Narasingapuram who recently purchased a house in the area.
Ganapathy visited the municipality office to update his name in house and water tax records. Gunasekaran had demanded a bribe of Rs 40,000 to update the records, a DVAC official said.
Ganapathy filed a complaint with the DVAC on Tuesday evening, leading to a planned operation to trap the bill collector.
As per the plan, Ganapathy on Wednesday handed over chemical-coated currency notes to the tune of Rs 25,000 to Gunasekaran as an advance. DVAC sleuths caught Gunasekaran red-handed. He was remanded in judicial custody.
