NEW DELHI: Mumbai has reported its first death due to the Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS virus), officials said on Wednesday.
According to reports, a 53-year-old ward boy from BMC’s V.N. Desai Hospital succumbed at Nair Hospital after prolonged illness.
A 10th-grade girl from Palghar is also admitted with the virus.
With this, the number of deaths suspected to be caused by Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) in the state has now risen to eight.
The first case of GBS in the Mumbai was reported on Saturday, when a 64-year-old woman tested positive for the rare nerve disorder.
In Maharashtra, Pune district has been the hardest hit, with the total number of suspected and confirmed GBS cases reaching 197, according to health department officials.
Of these 197 cases, 172 have been diagnosed with GBS. The breakdown includes 40 patients from Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) areas, 92 from newly incorporated villages in the PMC, 29 from Pimpri Chinchwad, 28 from Pune Rural, and eight from other districts.
The health department also reported that 104 patients have been discharged, while 50 remain in the ICU and 20 are on ventilator support.
