This Man Collected Over $20,000 In Change. And Now He’s Giving It Away.

Coin collectors usually fall somewhere between the meticulous curator and those who grab what they find in couches before heading to a Coinstar machine. This Florida man took a different approach when he started gathering discarded change 10 years ago. Rick Snyder saved every nickel and dime he found, and now it adds up to one pretty penny.

His diligence drums up to a whopping $21,495. And he knows exactly what he’s going to do with it.

He’s donating the entire sum to help take care of the feral cats in his neighborhood. Snyder was passionate about these cats for years.

The change weighs over 1 combined metric ton. Wow.

(via Huffington Post)

Snyder gathered the change while making his way around town to take care of the cats. He woke up at 4:00 every morning and checked car washes and vending machines for discarded coins. His original goal was $10,000, and now that he’s more than doubled it, he’s giving it all to the Gulf Shore Animal League.

The non-profit organization is run completely on volunteers and donations like Snyder’s. Organization president Cheryl Wade admits this is the largest donation they’ve received from a single person.

Watch this video to see the kittens helped by this amazing act of altruism.

10 Warning Signs of Colon Cancer You Shouldn’t Ignore

Blood in Stools
If you find blood on, or mixed in with your stools, then this could be sign that you have bowel cancer. The blood may be dark, or bright red, and mixed with mucus. Once you see your doctor, they will send off a stool sample for a laboratory analysis called a fecal occult blood test.

Changes in Stools
If you notice that your stools are very dark in color, or even maroon, and sticky, then this could be caused by bleeding due to bowel cancer. You may experience normal bowel movements in between these stools. You may also notice your stools becoming very narrow or ribbon-like, and the stool may only be as wide in diameter as a pen.

Rectal Bleeding
According to an article published in the July 2009 issue of “BMC Medicine: “Bleeding from the rectum occurs in more than half of people with colon cancer.” The blood is usually bright red and it may be found in the toilet bowl water or on the toilet paper. The blood may come after a painful bowel movement.

Trouble Passing Stool
Changes in passing of stools is a symptom of bowel cancer. You may experience a feeling of not completely passing a stool or you may feel the urgent need to have a bowel movement, and then you realize that there is no stool to be passed.

The blood that is lost from bowel cancer can cause anemia, which is a shortage of red blood cells in the blood. The symptoms of anemia are feeling tired a lot of the time, weak, and short of breath. Your skin may also look pale.

Abdominal Pain
A certain amount of abdominal discomfort is normal experience at times. However, if you suffer from gas, cramping and bloating a lot of the time, then you could be more likely to develop bowel cancer. It is best to see your doctor about your concerns.

Weight Loss
Bowel cancer can result in weight loss even if you are eating normally. Alternatively, you may experience complete loss of appetite. According to the July 2009, “BMC Medicine” article, more than a third of people with bowel cancer experience unexplained weight loss.

Constipation that persists more than a few days also may occur in association with colon cancer. Chronic or on-going constipation may even increase your risk of developing colon cancer.

Persistent diarrhea is a symptom of bowel cancer. According to the “BMC Medicine” article, more than 1 in 5 people with colon cancer will experience diarrhea.

Nausea and Vomiting
If you are experiencing persistent nausea and vomiting for no apparent reason, then this may be a symptom of colon cancer. It is possible to experience these with or without other abdominal symptoms.

So if you suspect that something is wrong, go to see your doctor, as early detection is a key to the best possible outcome.

Early cases can begin as noncancerous polyps. These often have no symptoms but can be detected by screening. For this reason, doctors recommend screenings for those at high risk or over the age of 50.

Symptoms may vary depending on the cancer’s size and location, but often include alterations in bowel habits.

Treatments include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation.

Architects in Ho Chi Minh City were asked to design a university campus. The outcome is magnificent.

Here is Vietnam.

It occupies the easternmost coast of the Indochina Peninsula in Southeast Asia.

Here is Ho Chi Minh City (also known as Saigon).

Located in southern Vietnam, it’s the country’s largest city, with a population of almost 8 million people.

And here’s what Ho Chi Minh City looks like.

It’s a big city with big buildings and lots of people, which makes for many a challenge.

“Cities, especially in thriving countries like Vietnam, are growing at such a speed that infrastructure is unable to keep pace,” said the team at Vo Trong Nghia Architects in an interview with Dezeen Magazine. “Environmental stress is observable through frequent energy shortages, increased pollution, rising temperatures, and reduced greenery.”

When the architects were asked to design a new urban university campus in Ho Chi Minh City, they had something radically non-urban in mind.

What they produced was a verdant design grassy, leafy, nature-inspired. It’s like a city within a city, intentionally overrun by vegetation.

Welcome to the jungle, kids. All images by Vo Trong Nghia Architects/FPT University.

The firm, which specializes in green architecture, is bringing their expertise to FPT University, a private university in Ho Chi Minh City, for the second time. Their first project is currently under construction in Hanoi.

They describe their approach as a blend of culture and sustainability:

“By experimenting with light, wind and water, and by using natural and local materials, Vo Trong Nghia Architects employ a contemporary design vocabulary to explore new ways to create green architecture for the 21st century, whilst maintaining the essence of Asian architectural expression.”

Their design for the university stands out against Ho Chi Minh City’s built-up urban sprawl.

They wanted a different kind of sprawl a 242,000 square-foot site that explodes with plant life. The centerpiece is a unique building stretching over several city blocks, its staggered floors climbing higher in the corners, and framing a massive courtyard.

They don’t just use greenery to adorn the structure. Their concept actually relies on it.

Balconies and rooftops will be lined with plants, giving the building the appearance of “an undulating forested mountain growing out of the city.”

Trees will spring from the courtyard.

And gardens will be planted at every step and turn.

All of this, according to the architects, “will provide shade and improve air quality, reducing the campus’ reliance on air conditioning.” And to save water, ground level gardens will seep into circulation wells that feed plants throughout the building.

They want to give Ho Chi Minh City “a new icon for sustainability.”

Rapid urbanization has turned Ho Chi Minh City into a heat island, which is when cities grow warmer than their rural surroundings because land, plants, and forests have been replaced heat-trapping concrete, brick, steel, and asphalt.

Today, say the architects, only 0.25% of the Ho Chi Minh City is covered with plant life. They think that while urbanization may be inevitable, turning our cities into ovens doesn’t have to be.

So they get especially excited about designing educational facilities. To them, it’s a chance to “aid the recovery of greenery that once flourished” and “foster a new generation of thinkers.”

And if more students, like the future enrollees of FPT University’s new campus, can be exposed to and learn to truly appreciate the astonishing form and function of nature, then there is, indeed, hope for the future of our cities and our planet.

15 Homeowners Who Took Their Backyard Fences To A New Level

This spring, we’ve already seen a ton of ways to jazz up your outdoor space here at Wimp. Whether you’re planning to grow a potato tower, build your own outdoor furniture, or just create a relaxing spot where you can daydream and read, 2016 is the year to finally make your dream backyard a reality.

As I’ve been considering my own backyard plans, the last thing I ever thought of revamping is the fence. After all, it was built out of necessity – how else to keep the dogs from escaping? With this list of 15 people who took their backyard fences to a whole new level, however, I learned that just because they are functional doesn’t mean they can’t be beautiful.

From murals to mirrors, butterflies to Calvin and Hobbes (seriously!), there is no end to what you can do to spruce up your fence and make your backyard the envy of the neighborhood. All these years, fences have been a giant, blank canvas just begging for inspiration. We’re so glad we finally found ours!

1. Tree Mural Fence

Just a can of paint and an afternoon’s work were all it took to transform this backyard fence into a whimsical, eye-catching focal point. Worried about your artistic skills? Pencil in the design (or ask a talented friend to do so), then carefully fill in with the paint color of your choice.

2. Bird House Fence

Royal Gardens

Bird-lovers, this one is for you! Build or purchase wooden birdhouses, then pick out some fun paint colors. People and birds alike will love the colorful decor.

3. Marble Fence

Garden Drama

To recreate this look, drill holes in your fence and fill them with marbles. It’s simple, but beautiful.

4. Beach Mural Fence

Von Flue Studios

This beach mural is decidedly more complicated, but, if you have the funds, consider seeking a local artist to recreate the look. Even if you live in the city or the woods, every day will be a day at the beach!

5. Cozy Cottage Fence

This delightful jumble of objects makes this area of the garden feel like a tiny, secret room. Make sure that any items you choose are water and weather resilient.

6. Mirror Fence

Brambleberry Cottage

This particular set of mirrors was crafted with vintage windows and other salvaged materials – details on the project can be found here. If you’re concerned about birds crashing into them, add a few press-on decals, specifically designed to save birds.

7. Calvin and Hobbes Mural Fence

This Calvin and Hobbes fence was painted in 2013 by a Reddit user who has since deleted their account. I wonder if the mysterious artist knows that they are Pinterest-famous …

8. Butterfly Fence

The Dallas Morning News

You know you have a fence to be proud of when your local news shows up to do a report! That’s exactly what happened to Curtis Fesser after he built these butterflies from roofing flashing and copper wire.

9. Vertical Garden Fence

Gardener’s Supply Company

Vertical gardens are an easy way to add a pop of color and life to your fence. You can buy vertical planters here.

10. Tin Can Garden Fence

Ciera Design Studio

Or, if DIY is more your thing, try crafting these tin can planters instead. Details are here

11. Flowers On An “Old Shutter” Fence

Alexandria’s Design Studio

This lady didn’t have a fence, but she did have a bunch of old shutters lying around. By standing them side by side and adding some tin flower art, she created a gorgeous and effective barrier.

12. Carved Gecko Fence

Kate McMillan

Maybe you’re more of a minimalist – that’s ok! Carving a gecko into your fence is the perfect way to make a quiet statement.

13. Another Vertical Garden Fence

You can never have too many vertical gardens. While all kinds of plants will grow in the space, succulents are easy to maintain and look fantastic. Best of all, they can withstand a few days without water. That’s my kind of plant!

14. Rain Boot Garden Fence

Rosina Huber

If you want to upgrade your fence on a budget, look around your home for things you already own. This mom made a delightful planter out of her kid’s old rain boots. More details are here

15. Sunflower Mural Fence

This sunflower mural fence is located at ChocolaTree Organic Eatery in Sedona, Arizona. It really puts the SUN in sunflower!

Don’t forget to SHARE these awesome backyard fences with your friends and family!

This Is The New Loneliness

Its a weekday evening and youre feeling restless. Youre texting friends and youre watching Netflix and youre on your laptop and youre scrolling through Tumblr or Facebook or Instagram or Twitter. Your attention is in ten different directions, yet theres a tug, a tiny voice in the back of your mind. It asks: You ignore. Scroll again. Click again.

You send a text: Wanna hang tomorrow night?

Sure, I need to leave my apartment eventually, lol

L O L, me too, goddddd. Ok, let’s plan tomorrow

Tomorrow rolls around.

You know, can we maybe rain check on plans? Im cozy!

YES, omg, I totally wanted to bail, too. PERFECT.

Then, you two text all night. Netflix on in the background. Computer on your lap. Scroll. Click. Scroll. Click. Refresh. Scroll. Click. Text.

Wait a second. What? How is our new normal? What are we doing with our lives? Making plans with actual human beings and then canceling in favor of a screen, Netflix, gchat, bullshit, bullshit, bullshit. How is this okay? How are we accepting this?

How is this a life?

It’s not a life, actually. We cannot spend our days hunched over a screen forging a sense of human interaction. This is not what we were made for. I can guarantee all your best memories live within the moments with others. Wheres your great memory with the internet? Is this really all there is now?

When you look back on your life, will you be happy by how much Netflix youve watched? Will you be happy about the graveyard of plans you let fall by the wayside? Will you be happy when youre surrounded by no one because weve all pushed each other away? Pushed and pushed and pushed and, in favor of what?

Its the weirdest thing: our generation. Were the and connected generation ever and yet if you spend some time on the internet, you see:

, undiagnosed, unchecked
, of the social variety
, rampant and unbelievable
, like it’s a lifestyle
, like never leaving our apartments is healthy
, like connection with other people is a bad thing
like its cool…
like its kind…
like its a human being…

Do people have true mental illnesses? God, yes. Of course! But this isnt about mental illness. People with diagnosable depression, anxiety, and other mental illnesses dont make a lifestyle of it. They dont make a home in those diseases. They frantically fight for their life, because they . They get help. They furiously their happiness.

Our generation of sadness and loneliness is of the unchecked variety. Of wallowing. Of letting ourselves be disconnected from both others and ourselves. Learning to more than . Learning to put a band-aid on problems instead of working and our problems. If something is not immediate, we don’t want it, even if it’ll make us stronger. We’re not growing as people, not really. We’re shoving away “bad feelings” we don’t want to face by clicking, refreshing, scrolling until we’ve numbed ourselves out enough. It’s addiction.

Emotional strength is . It cannot be earned by self-distraction. And, thats what all of this is. DISTRACTION.

Distraction from ourselves.
Distraction from potential pain.
Distraction from our lives, those hopes, those dreams.
Distraction from vulnerability.
Distraction from compassion.
Distraction from kindness.
Distraction from

And, it is making us miserable. It really is. Take a look at your life. Take a look at how you spend your time. Are you happy? Do you have joy? Whens the last time you sat in front of a computer screen for longer than 2-3 hours and walked away feeling joyous and energized? Whens the last time a computer, a television screen, an iPad, a phone made you feel ? Whens the last time you felt you were loved and taken care of and healed? Whens the last time you felt ?

Weve taken it too far, thats what is problematic. The internet and these devices are not wholly unhealthy, but its the obsession, the constant consumption, the way it breeds a lack of connection with real people. And, it does breed that.

Can all of this technology be great? Yes. But were not using it that way. We’re being reckless. We’re acting like none of this matters, that how we spend our is not how we spend our , but it all matters and how we spend our days is how we spend our lives. It is. It just is.

I think we’re afraid, but that’s the whole point of lifethat facing down our fears provides for a richer experience. We are not meant to circumvent the process of healing ourselves. We need to who we are in order to who we are. We cannot find true connection and true love and the purity of both of those experiences while spending our days not caring about others or ourselves. To not care is to be cool now? Pizza! Netflix! Do nothing all day! Sweatpants! Homebody! Introvert! Hahahahahahahahahah, were all so sad and hate each other!

But, it’s not funny. None of this is.

This is your life. YOUR. LIFE. Do you get it? This is it. And youre fucking wasting it. Wake up. Life happens in a blink. Once its gone, its . Dont scroll, click, refresh it away. Be here, now. Show up. Care about shit. Care about others. Care about . Be better than this. Lets all do it. And, if we all do it: maybe itll be a fucking revolution.

Im sick of this sadness. Im sick of this loneliness. Im sick of this disconnection from others. Im so sick of it. Arent you?

All Adverts In Londons Underground Station Have Been Replaced With Cat Pictures

If you arrived at Clapham Common tube station one morning to find that every advert had been replaced with pictures of cats, you’d no doubt logically conclude that our feline friends paid for the initiative as part of their first steps towards world domination. And in a way you’d be right, because the stunt was indeed paid for by CATS. But fortunately for us, that’s where the conspiracy ends, because CATS stands for the Citizens Advertising Takeover Service, and they’re the team responsible for this rather bizarre campaign.

It was funded via Kickstarter by almost 700 people who pledged over 23k GBP to get the project up and running, and as organizer James Turner noted in a blog, “This isn’t a clever marketing stunt. The people behind it are volunteers. We want to inspire people to think differently about the world and realize they have the power to change it.” So for the next two weeks, Clapham Common won’t just be serving the Northern Line. It’ll also be serving the FE-line!

Watching A Snow Bengal Kitten Become Friends With A Lab Puppy Is Way Too Precious

At Maplewood Bengals in New York, they raise Bengal kittens — and they’re insanely cute. These exotic cats are adorable on their own, but this particular kitty’s new best friend really ups the precious ante.

These two love playing together, and even though the puppy looks a little bit sleepy in the video below, it’s clear that this dynamic duo is prepping for a lifelong friendship.

It’s a shame that all BFFs can’t be this cute! I have a feeling that these two never fight like cats and dogs.

Ten Warning Signs Of Cervical Cancer You Shouldn’t Ignore

Ten Warning Signs Of Cervical Cancer You Shouldn’t Ignore

  1. Leg Pain
Some women exhibiting early stages of cervical cancer experience swelling and pain in the leg. When the cervix swells it can lead to an obstructed blood flow, which eventually causes the leg to swell and gives a sore, painful sensation.
  2. Vaginal Discharge
It’s normal for a woman to experience small amounts of clear discharge without color or odor. If the output of discharge increases, smells foul, or has any type of irregular appearance, it could be a sign of onset cervical cancer.
  3. Unusual Bleeding
Of all the symptoms, this is likely the most common. If a woman is experiencing an untimely bout of vaginal bleeding, it could be an indicator of cervical cancer. Consider contacting a physician if you experience persistent bleeding in between menstrual periods or following sexual intercourse. Women who are postmenopausal and no longer have periods should pay close attention to this symptom.
  4. Discomforting Urination
Keeping track of urination can help reveal the presence of cervical cancer in several ways. The most immediately obvious and prevalent symptom is discomfort while urinating. This is normally described as a tight and concentrating stinging sensation, but it can take on several different discomforting sensations. Usually when urinary symptoms are involved, the cancer has spread to nearby tissue and requires immediate attention.
  5. Irregular Urination
The appearance of the urine and urinary habits can also be symptoms of cervical cancer. If you notice strange changes in the frequency of your urine, loss of bladder control (incontinence) or a discoloration – especially with blood – seek the input of a medical professional.
  6. Irregular Menstrual Cycles
There should be some level of consistency when it comes to monthly periods. If time, frequency, or any other changes disrupt the regular routine, it may be linked to a future with cervical cancer. Take note of any medication you are on and consult a physician if inconsistencies persist.
  7. Uncomfortable Sex
Painful intercourse, otherwise known as dyspareunia, is another discomforting side effect of cervical cancer. There are several possible reasons for this symptom to develop, as is the case with many of the symptoms on this list. This symptom is most commonly linked to conditions that require medical attention, however, so it shouldn’t be ignored.
  8. Pelvic Pain
Pelvic pain is a fairly routine burden of being a woman. Cramping and aches during a menstrual cycle are perfectly normal, but when pain lasts for longer periods, happens frequently, or becomes more intense than usual it could beckon a look from the doctor.
  9. Back Pain
Back pain is common, affecting around 80 percent of Americans, and it can happen for a wide variety of reasons, but if accompanied with other symptoms from the list, go for a medical check-up.
  10. Unexplained Loss of Weight and Fatigue
Again, on its own, these symptoms can be a result of other factors, but when other symptoms are present, it should signal the need for a physical check-up. Cervical cancer can reduce the number of healthy red blood cells which are replaced by white blood cells that try fighting off the disease. This can cause anaemia which typically causes the woman to feel unexplained fatigue, lack of energy, and can lead to weight loss due to a loss of appetite.
